The Odd Life of Timothy Green (2012)

I really enjoyed this movie. A great family film, I was surprised by its depth. This film and its concept may appear odd from the trailers and ads, but let me assure you, if you watch this movie for yourself, it's very touching and heartwarming. Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Gardner are simply wonderful as the two parents who make their dream of having a child come true. On the surface, Timothy Green might appear to be a feel good film about parent-child relationships and how everyone has value. If one digs a little, however, he may find more tenaciously rooted messages. Watching this film really helped me look at life in a whole different aspect and how important family truly is. 

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

Very cute movie. Definitely different! Acting is great and the story is quite funny. Absolutely fantastic in every aspect of film making! Its about two kids from completely different families and in different situations, who find a connection in their shared sense of loss, either from parents who were deceased or parents who were alive, yet never present. The struggles to survive their individual childhoods are soothed by each other. In one another they find the support to move through their pain, progress into adult situations and give each other comfort they couldn't receive from adults. 

Heroine (2012)

"If a heroine buys a car, it’s gifted to her by a businessman, if she goes to LA, she’s getting plastic surgery done and, God forbid, if she goes to Dubai, you people make a rate card for her."

What do you expect of a Madhur Bhandarkar film? Fashion, Page 3 or Chandni Bar... a list of fabulous movies to his credit. But not this time, Heroine is old wine in a new bottle. There is not even a single moment of novelty in the whole movie. Same fake smiles, dirty realities, the lonely depths of failures, unspoken truths, etc. If you have seen Fashion, you could be seen drawing similarities while watching the movie. The movie with this concept seems to be too long and too confusing at times.

Premium Rush (2012)

"I like to ride. Fixed gear. No brakes. Can't stop. Don't want to, either."

It's not a 10 star film but it is a fun ride with action that makes up for a few flaws in plot and the flow of storyline. The best issue in this film is almost constant action and wild biking through the New York streets. A movie that while thin and silly, moves with such joyous speed that you almost want to throw your arms in the air and scream. One of the elements that were new to the screen and highly workable were the sudden stop of action to follow the split-second decision making of a messenger/biker. Choices (usualy three) that have to be made in the moment. The bad guy in the film is nasty and very believable. Enjoy the earthy feel of the cameras that capture the life of a messenger on two wheels competing with trucks, cabs, and cops.

Teddy Bear (2012)

The writer Helmer's debut feature "Teddy Bear" is an offbeat character study about an enormous Danish bodybuilder whose painful shyness leads him to look for an arranged bride in Thailand. The low-key drama is well crafted and likable as far as it goes, but there's not enough narrative impetus or depth to maintain more than passing viewer interest. The result is moderately engaging but also a bit pokey and underwhelming, with little to say in the end beyond "incredible hulks have feelings, too." Nor do the competent design elements contribute much oomph. Original Danish title translates as "Ten Hours to Paradise."

Lawless (2012)

IMDB Rating: 7.7

Lawless is a film that you are either going to relish about, or going to completely shut out. I say this because, the movie is not fast paced, nor does it have a lot of action, and in today's society that is what most people want when they see films on the big screen. If you like action packed movies, this is not down your ally, and should probably check out Expendables 2 or Resident Evil: Retribution or any other for that matter.

Arbitrage (2012)

"World events all revolve around five things: M-O-N-E-Y."

It's instructive to note what a killer actor Richard Gere can be when a movie rises to his level. Arbitrage is such a movie, a sinfully entertaining look at the sins committed in the name of money. Richard Gere as Robert Miller is very convincing as a sophisticated , wealthy man who loves his work , loves his wife, daughter, son and of course his own girlfriend Julie. Arbitrage reminds of Disclosure, in that the intensity of it doesn't come from action but from the escalating drama, the talented actors and the plot. You don't know whether to hate Robert Miller or feel sorry for him, because even though he's doing bad things he doesn't have bad intentions. And Richard Gere pulls it off without a hitch, his first major role in years.

Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)

IMDB Rating: 6.4

A cacophony of abstract action-horror mayhem, this fifth entry in the video-game-inspired franchise finds superheroine Alice (Milla Jovovich) massacring zombies per usual as she attempts to escape an underwater complex. Retribution really doesn't offer anything new, if Alice remembers anything at all she probably will have a feeling of deja-vu from the previous instalments but the movie barrels along from one gory, action set-piece to another without giving the audience too long to worry about how ridiculous it all is.
